So, given these two facts one might predict that my pledge to become a "Ready-To-Wear Free Zone" in 2014 is doomed from the start! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Oh ye of little faith! My prediction is that this pledge might not be as difficult to uphold in 2014 as it would have been in 2009. Several factors conspire to bolster my chances of success....</span><br />
<ol>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I have TOO MANY DAMN CLOTHES - most of which I rarely wear. I know that I am not alone in this transgression!</span><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNryW1NTV6Qn5hmQUFIB0rGpkO1nn0S6f3yqjATLzqZf0sgx5_6cuqqpiBTR_kJyMSi3e-dW1mVHcPbhuvKMRgQT28462mFvvHFH6Bwuvze0o-CPi1oPziUfDXXaxexGeQUpad/s1600/too+many+clothes.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNryW1NTV6Qn5hmQUFIB0rGpkO1nn0S6f3yqjATLzqZf0sgx5_6cuqqpiBTR_kJyMSi3e-dW1mVHcPbhuvKMRgQT28462mFvvHFH6Bwuvze0o-CPi1oPziUfDXXaxexGeQUpad/s1600/too+many+clothes.jpeg" height="320" width="255" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif; font-size: xx-small;"> (Image is from <span style="background-color: #f9f9f9; color: #111111; line-height: 22px;">Elisheva: </span><span style="color: #111111;"><span style="line-height: 22px;">http://bellabusta.tumblr.com/post/36816418436/cluttered-cramped-and-crowded-closets-why-do-we-own)</span></span></span></div>
</li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I find myself shopping for the ultimate bargain and end up buying lots of inexpensive - strike that - CHEAP garments that last slightly longer than the new chew toys that we buy for Bogey (our chew-toy-destroying-Golden-Retriever)</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I have become a complete devotee of (read: obsessed with) buying vintage, consignment and/or thrift - - perhaps too much of a devotee (which has contributed to #1 on this list!). Unfortunately it appears that my RTW fast also extends to these types of purchases so this is where my self-control gene needs to up-regulate!</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I love "up-cycling" clothing that I am gifted or have purchased as part of my #3 obsession</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">I am reading "<a href="http://www.overdressedthebook.com/" target="_blank">Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion</a>" by Elizabeth Cline. The Huffington post describes her book this way: "<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21px;">Cline dissects the current state of global fashion production and consumption, putting America's habits into a pretty dim perspective."</span></span></li>

<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/11/overdressed-book-elizabeth-cline_n_1587413.html" target="_blank">Huffington Post</a> goes on to provide several examples from Ms. Cline's tome (which I will brazenly share here because I am now officially late in getting ready for work!!)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<ol style="background-color: white; border: 0px; counter-reset: li 0; line-height: 21px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 15px 20px; padding: 0px;">
<li style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 4px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><strong style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">There are no trends anymore.</strong> According to Cline, gone are the days of discernible decades. While the '80s had <span style="list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial;">hammer pants</span> and the '90s had <span style="list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial;">crop tops</span>, the rise of "<span style="list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial;">fast fashion</span>" has made it so that those who came of age post millenium will be without a quintessential embarrassing trend.</span></li>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<li style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 4px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><strong style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">We're addicted...to low-cost items.</strong> She writes that we've grown accustomed to paying less and getting more -- a lot more. According to Cline, American families spend an average of $1,700 per year on clothing, and, as a nation, we're hoarding about <em style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">20 billion</em> garments per year. If you've ever over-rationalized a potential purchase ("I don't <em style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">need</em> them, but you can never have too many pairs of jeans, right?"), this number sounds about right.</span></li>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<li style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 4px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><strong style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">So many items of clothing to buy, so few places to buy them.</strong> While we're being over-inundated with actual pieces, our store options are being pared down with <span style="list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial;">huge chains dominating the industry</span>, leaving us with fewer places to shop.</span></li>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<li style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 4px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><strong style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Polyester is now the world's dominant fiber.</strong> This <em style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">really</em> drives home Cline's "quantity over quality" point.</span></li>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<li style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 4px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><strong style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">The cost of <span style="list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial;">producing garments in New York's famed garment center</span> hasn't risen much over the years.</strong> Contrary to popular belief, the actual cost of producing clothes in the once-thriving hub has remained pretty much the same. The price of producing garments outside the United States, on the other hand, has become ridiculously low, effectively ending the heyday of domestic fashion production.</span></li>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<li style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 4px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><strong style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">While the price of housing, gas, education, health care and most other basic necessities have been steadily on the rise, clothing prices as a whole have dropped.</strong> This may be hard to believe after <span style="list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial;">Kanye's Nike Airs sell for $93,000</span>, but there are certainly a lot more people <span style="list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial;">queuing up in front of H&M to buy discounted Versace</span> than bidding on five-figure kicks.</span></li>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<li style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 4px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><strong style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">The entire life cycle of a Zara garment is a mere two weeks long.</strong>Zara can design, produce, deliver, display <em style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">and</em> theoretically sell a piece of clothing in just 14 days. This may help justify <span style="list-style-image: initial; list-style-position: initial;">the high price of a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps</span> versus the affordable, red-soled versions from Zara.</span></li>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">

Ever.</strong>Cline visited a major distribution center in New York City and found out that they process an average of five tons of garments <em style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">every day</em> and only choose 11,200 to send out to stores.</span></li>
<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px;">

<li class="last" style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px 0px 4px 20px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><strong style="border: 0px; list-style: none; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">In a perfect world, we would sew all of our own clothes.</strong> Kind of. Cline argues that the overconsumption of fashion has led to a decline in craftsmanship. In a chapter entitled "Sewing Is A Good Job, A Great Job," Cline asserts that the emphasis on speed and cutting costs has essentially made our clothes as disposable as a paper cup. What if we promise to buy our clothes from Etsy?<span style="color: red;"> <span style="font-size: large;">OR TAKE THE RTW PLEDGE????</span></span></span></li>

Today I join over 200 of my fellow seamsters and embark on a 365 day Ready-To-Wear "fast" - - no new purchased items (except a few essentials - most importantly SHOES) for an entire year. Any new garments I want in 2014 I'll be creating myself!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
Many thanks (I think) to Sarah Gunn for organizing this exercise in creativity and restraint! Wish me luck!!!<br />

Face that stash pile. Open your eyes. What do you see? Endless possibilities? Mounds of mismatched and disparate textiles? Maybe a bit of both!<br />
<br />
EYES WIDE OPEN!<br />
<br />
Let's resolve to cull that stash pile. Send your discards to those who will love it anew. Embrace (REALLY embrace) the cuts left behind. Dream and create. Cut and sew. Wear and regale.<br />
<br />
I am. Let's do it together!<br />
<br />
Here are a couple of my most treasured cuts. By the end of January (this blog post is my witness) I will have no fewer than 2 garments made (it helps that Scandal is on hiatus til then!).....<br />

I thought I might turn my gaze back to sewing - not just thinking and talking about sewing - but actually putting a needle through fabric!<br />
<br />
And to keep me on track I am seriously thinking about joining Sarah Gunn (hmm - sistah or cuz of Tim??) and her latest "Ready to Wear Fast"!<br />
<br />

Stay tuned as I slog, blog and stitch my way through 2014!<br />

<br /></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFgRAULtX-7yzE7kuM6NjMOAlRxFGDLnfBgixDW6qiTsO0KOzJlZHH_epWaZAmPZXhO6pT7eObCTkSaytAY-38QoQJ47HJL9zXBoidUQV5ZXXR6qszVjb_W-jWouBACcs2iDlX/s1600/PTDC0344.JPG" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"></a>but soooooo long between posts.<div>
<br /></div><div>Not really sure that I have a good reason for my absence except that life gets busier and busier and I believe I've been eaten by Facebook! Anyway I do have a few items to show for all those lost hours!</div><div>
<br /></div><div>First - a maxi dress that I made using a very fine cotton-silk blend I picked up in NYC last season. The fabric feels like butter and was a bliss to work with! I used <a href="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v8241-products-5032.php?page_id=856">Vogue 8241</a> - easy peasy with very straightforward instructions. No real design changes/enhancements except that I used a different technique than offered in the instructions for "flipping" the bodice - same result - and I lined only the bodice in a black china silk. I've wore it out for a nice summer dinner as well as to a beach party - - really versatile!</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFgRAULtX-7yzE7kuM6NjMOAlRxFGDLnfBgixDW6qiTsO0KOzJlZHH_epWaZAmPZXhO6pT7eObCTkSaytAY-38QoQJ47HJL9zXBoidUQV5ZXXR6qszVjb_W-jWouBACcs2iDlX/s320/PTDC0344.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643821929591832594" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpRv1SKxB6XwFa5d27mLWhBiyX69tLWXz0Bpfur48S__j-c0NJWQmiIPWtsHUWLN3VU5sX4QCunMbFKuG4EHgzLOxM9xkWik1ytgFcEyIFDeL_SanBxHdchcg1UEdruXI_VmUr/s320/PTDC0345.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643821939217782530" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgka5zOVR7cSgv-Bk6jdKgSswNplfLTEExWoj2BM62lDvlF-gJV5XkQSeB2eXqtCDw6DyjJ2HyF8VxApmcXoQF-xxBK6Gl3BmzVenyk8l2g7Km1uy5w-eUGPaPbP0a19cc4_7go/s320/PTDC0347.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643821945195408338" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" >(I apologize for the poor quality of my photos -</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" > anyone out there with a suggestion for a good, small, versatile, moderately priced camera - </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" >my old standby is failing me!?)</span></div><div>
<br /></div><div>
<br /></div><div>And then there's my newest, um, obsession/time sink/money hole - knitting! And here is my first real, DRUM ROLL, sweater!!! </div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0YVYwK7803TFQ6yHYsfqaPc5AknWQVukM3t62OSUOnvzmK5PTqM8vD7IHVAH9_2Hz3h6aTIYSvYxK6FYNr85rXaZq5Pp2nWEa36okjpKNFZbLQ13U0Fti6JsBFB6d_-vOzLSA/s320/PTDC0355.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643823249436810706" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifHinMKdZI7vv9w0amAwp-7yTxdKKeyv60HvDEEaD-0eB8-hUO2bKbZrvabXuMEIpiHpgKbMFxXh41YiAL7XHEGQuPik3HACBPycBAC5fH5UTQBzg21ytxxCqCuxK_9Kxd5l1a/s320/PTDC0359.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5643823261355690818" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div>I did it! I made a real live sweater from the top down! And it fits! And I like it! And I wore it! None of these statements did I EVER think would ever be uttered from my mouth about something I knitted! I owe my success to Rachel at <a href="http://loopedyarnworks.com/">Looped Yarns</a> for her support and stellar instructions (and did I mention her support???) The pattern is designed by Elizabeth Smith from <a href="http://thebrownstitch.com/2009/05/mud-season.html">The Brown Stitch</a>. Great pattern for a beginner - pretty straight forward but with lots of challenges from which to learn!</div><div>
<br /></div><div>Thanks for peeking in on my progress! Am working on a great mid-weight linen jacket for fall! About to head in to cut it out now! </div><div>

Lisa of<a href="http://quarterlife202.com/"> Quarterlife 202</a>, Erin and Nora from <a href="http://www.gingerrootdesign.com/">Ginger Root</a> and Shannan of <a href="http://www.junctionwdc.com/">Junction Vintage </a>shared their collective wisdom and tales with over 50 sewists and vintage fashionistas.</p> <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.dcthreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Girlz1.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-1556" title="Girlz" src="http://www.dcthreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Girlz1-1024x789.jpg" alt="Girlz" height="245" width="318" /></a><br /></p> <p>Shannan started the evening off with "ReFab 101" discussing the difference between thrift, consignment and vintage. She also shared with us how she took the vision for Junction Vintage and grew it into a thriving business. Lisa, with her expnsive knowledge of the DC world of vintage, gave us some insider's tips on how to make sense of the madness that sometimes besets us as we approach a consignment or vintage store or collection. She also had loads of tips about how to "shop your closet". Last, but certainly not least, were the girls from Ginger Root. Their amazing mission of translating landfill bound garments and fabric into uber-chic garments captured the crowd's creative hearts! They brought along some amazing examples of their work! The crowd had LOTS of questions and the panelists didn't disappoint! Here are some of the resources that they referenced during the event:</p> <ul><li> The Swapaholics: <a href="http://www.theswapaholics.com/" target="_blank">www.theswapaholics.com</a><br /></li><li>This Google map of thrift stores in the area is pretty awesome: <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=nrl&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=ivnscm&resnum=1&biw=1408&bih=645&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=thrift+stores+washington+dc&fb=1&gl=us&hq=thrift+stores&hnear=Washington+D.C" target="_blank">http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=nrl&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&prmd=ivnscm&resnum=1&biw=1408&bih=645&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=thrift+stores+washington+dc&fb=1&gl=us&hq=thrift+stores&hnear=Washington+D.C</a>.,+DC&ei=ug_DTZvIAs6gtwfw9omlBQ&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CA8QtgMwAA (oops it is larrrrge)</li><li>The Vintage Fashion Guild is a good resource to have on hand: <a href="http://vintagefashionguild.org/" target="_blank">http://vintagefashionguild.org</a><br /></li><li><a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1l333myfzxayQFVunyEfMNy0V--eGQHwGK7mFg0mQDZE/edit?hl=en&authkey=CNTyp_IC" target="_blank">Hidden Treasures</a><br /></li><li> <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1M_ZLM7ROYV5HlOetd8jZBpeUprhADhsdP6qo9Gv30D8/edit?hl=en&authkey=CMr1oakF" target="_blank">Preparing to go thrifting</a><br /></li><li> <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/163MStZYhA-D5Y4ZVU7uDQ0mG8TMhd5FbB1wUtEkQ_0Y/edit?hl=en&authkey=CJ2sj5QN" target="_blank">Day of thrifting tips</a><br /></li><li> <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1vcBkjBNIgIoNkMBUzCCO0nE93LfygI3Ergmxu8oko2g/edit?hl=en&authkey=CIjIsPAM" target="_blank">Vintage resource websites</a><br /></li></ul> <p>And many thanks to<a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/fabricsandtrimmings"> Fabric and Trimmings</a> for donating the chic seersucker cut of fabric!</p><p>Let's let the evening's pics speak for themselves!</p><p><br /></p><b><i></i></b><p style="text-align: left;"><i>Ginger Root transforms an 80's style jacket into lattice-inspired work of art</i></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.dcthreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/red-jacket-2.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1542" title="red jacket 2" src="http://www.dcthreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/red-jacket-2-300x225.jpg" alt="red jacket 2" height="225" width="300" /></a><i><br /></i></p> <p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.dcthreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Red-Jacket.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1549" title="Red Jacket" src="http://www.dcthreads.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Red-Jacket-300x204.jpg" alt="Red Jacket" height="204" width="300" /></a></p> <p style="text-align: left; <br /><a href="http://www.buttonmad.com/">Incomparable Buttons</a> was started as a small company in 1984 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Working around a kitchen table, often late into the night, Jennifer Pascall was busy transforming small pieces of clay into buttons of all shapes and sizes. Many of the first designs, which are still popular today, were inspired by Africa’s rich ethnic artworks and distinctive wild animals. Over the years Incomparable began specialising in the creation of handmade buttons, craft pieces, craft kits, painting kits, greeting cards and jewelry.

Today, Jennifer’s entire family, as well as 45 women from the local community are involved in the business. Most of the Incomparable team had never held a paintbrush before they joined the company and are now absolute masters of their brushes and justifiably proud of their work. The ladies sense of belonging within the company and skills as crafters not only gives them tremendous pleasure but also provides them with economic empowerment and has uplifted all their families.

<br /></span></div>Jennifer Pascall and her team contacted us to inquire if we would be interested in GIVING AWAY some of their B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L buttons to our DC Threads Community! Buttons from heaven!!!! After we read about Jennifer and had the opportunity to "chat" with her about her South African community and her crafting philosophy we immediately were interested in sharing Incomparable Buttons' art with our community - and the reception was incredible.
<br />
<br />We gave away cards and cards of exquisite ceramic hand-crafted buttons at two DC Threads events - the Betz White Sip and Stitch and our April Sewing Lounge! Here are some photos of the events and the lovely buttons! We also asked the "winners" of the buttons to share with us their impressions of the buttons and also to imagine how they might incorporate the buttons into their next grand creation! Here they are..............

<br />Hi Darlings!
<br />Good news on the home front - my vintage jacket is done! I love it and will definitely make it again! I love the quirky design and it was easy peasy to construct! This go around the "pop" is on the inside of the garment - take a peek at the lining! For the jacket I used yardage from my stash that I have been itching to use for years so I'm happy to have it put to good use but I think the quirkiness of the design deserves a little more life! Whereas I like the fabric (I wore it with an ivory pencil skirt to work) I know that I will definitely be less conservative with my next iteration of this garment! And - - I've included a photo of the infamous drunken, kidney donor bound buttonhole (see Facebook post below) - not my best work but you'll understand why, in my view, it's just perfect!!

<br /><i><span class="Apple-style-span">"Just in case anyone was wondering - bound buttonholes and drinking do not mix!! Here's the backstory.... my good friend, Jack, recently donated one of his kidneys to a neighbor (I know - how insignificant do YOU feel right now??) - anyway he had a HORRIBLE post-op course but he turned the corner this weekend. So yesterday my friend Ava and I were having a sewing marathon and we decided to take a bottle of wine to the hospital to toast Jack's road to recovery with his wife, Julie! Well we did that and I apparently am now a light-weight because when we came back and resumed our sewing the resulting bound buttonhole was not pretty (not awful but not pretty)! I thought about taking it out and trying again - but ya know, I am leaving it there with all of its imperfections so that I will remember the night we toasted my friend Jack, the hero!"</span></i>
<br />
<br />
<br />Thanks to Joanne and Meg for organizing and hosting the sew-along! What's next up on the sew-along queue??

<br />For the last two months I, happily, have spend ALOT of my time (typically dedicated to sewing) on programming for <a href="http://www.dcthreads.org/">DC Threads</a>. Allison's generosity with the <a href="http://www.blogger.com/bitsofthread.com">Bits of Thread Sewing Studio</a> space has allowed the sewing events supported by DC Threads to blossom! In two short months we have changed the time and format (slightly) of our monthly FREE <a href="http://www.dcthreads.org/loungemain/the-lounge/">sewing lounge</a>, we've added evening "<a href="http://www.dcthreads.org/2011/01/25/sip-and-stitch-its-a-keeper/">Sip and Stitch</a>" events, and started "<a href="http://www.dcthreads.org/2011/02/28/stitching-for-change-little-dresses-for-haiti/">Stitching for Change - Little Dresses for Haiti</a>" (this event is the one about which I am most excited)!
<br />
<br />All great news for DC Threads (and we hope for all those sewing enthusiasts in DC) but not so great for my personal sewing addiction! I fear that I may be starting to go through withdrawal! So this weekend I am doing what I have done for my hangovers in the past - a little hair 'o the dog! Will head to my sewing studio in a few minutes and get back on that bad horse!! I have some DELICIOUS linen that I picked up at Gray Line Linen in NYC during my trip last month (and, yes Meg, I still owe you a review of Gray Line!!!!) and I WILL have two FABULOUS garments constructed in time for Spring! YES I WILL!!
<br />
<br />I thought you might like to see what the <a href="http://www.fashionofgoodwill.org/blog/2011/03/04/guest-blogger-lil-dresses-for-haiti-stitching-for-change/">DC Fashionista</a> had to say about her time with us during our inaugural "Stitching for Change" event! Thanks Abigail - can't wait to sew with you again, soon!!<div>
<br /></div><div>And - some photos of those beautiful little dresses for those, oh so, beautiful little girls constructed by the most beautiful of friends!!

You heard right!
<br />
<br />DC Threads caught some major ink in the current issue of <a href="http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/vogue-patterns-magazine-february-march-2011-products-13728.php?page_id=325">Vogue Pattern Magazine</a> (February/March 2011).
<br />
<br />Linda Turner Griepentrog penned a great piece about "today's sewing circle" - the Sewing Lounge. She featured photos of ten Lounges from all over the US - including Baltimore's The <a href="http://www.sassysewer.com/">Sassy SEWer Sewing Lounge</a>!
<br />
<br />Too bad Allison's <a href="http://www.bitsofthread.com/">Bits of Thread Sewing Studi</a>o was but a twinkle of a dream months ago when we were interviewed for the story!
<br />
<br />DC Threads was featured in a special side-bar focusing on our community service focus! RAH!!!
<br />
<br />The story is great - we especially love the pics of Doris Lum, our stellar beginners' coach and Erica and Teoki, a couple of our fav sewists! Two years and two hundred sewists later DC Threads finally has a pillow upon which to rest its head! I'm happy to report that I am co-authoring a book chapter for work (very exciting) but not so happy to report that the task has been <i>way</i> more stressful and time consuming than I had planned! That said, the deadline for the editor is November 1st so I am already planning my celebratory trip to NYC! In the meantime, I wanted to share with you a dress that I made in September. I crafted it from a cut of hearty Italian cotton that I have had in my stash for years! The motif is HUGE and the repeat is even longer so I perseverated over the design for years. And as you can see I just went for plain SIMPLE! How about those strategically placed bodice motifs! Can you tell that I was getting a little bored??? Oh well, a girl needs SOMETHING to fill out the upper half of her garment - why not use an optical illusion!!!!! Not sure how much I will wear it but I finally cut the fabric!! Hope to get back to the sewing machine soon!</div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoJWYlTnH9psbLw7iy75s6P94bZtIRRHUupaORS66RGAbWBTOT2bHcZ3OqYDKrExz_NJS_7sgi5zheR0DMNv4Dr9o1kyR17pzCio8yDYyu2rayj9TsbIGQS_rRC2C9HFo7C_Li/s320/Motif+Dress+1.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529338911684319858" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div><br /></div><div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr3bmwZGAJx9UBSpJhlVkIDjQvAw5-4jj-xWZ5CRtF06G-RLx4jQQnhdt4Pr_FTlMQ8iGLvDEJpz2Cl9c4wR8m_-R5SDEw4jKQfedwCjBo3uEBS7uy0jn5kVJBEJ22CBi_ATDZ/s320/Motif+Dress+Detail.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529338916432625842" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; ">Cheers,</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; ">Laura</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; ">.</span></div>Laura Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14990080568157630209noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37398980.post-53928741731855832102010-09-26T11:47:00.012-04:002010-09-26T13:56:18.750-04:00Sew Local, Know Local!<div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJt2iMZOAaZ0X-fPDBgU4-T5rZU_LfyKjmehvyUq_AdZPIq9K9Yb9q5s493xjuuOPMvHdkbTFJJL_jQ9aBj1M4blGvANL8nSR-MTfN3bD1kz652esEbyV9ca4Tt8uHSFYNpbKP/s1600/DSCI0367.JPG"></a><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-large;"><b><i><span class="Apple-style-span">Thanks Betz White!!!!!</span></i></b></span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlPwTKQdmS9rIdRz6WLIJFe4ViBFFOJTIkUqX0dCpbgmNCqVKIV8fjPqXT5ugtqtHuyoVZSF7dDLtA8xk2tdhzIfUi0EV4ZPCbbE2abWKzkrp4RoRcM4ipjj6ZlBgPXK0KAT_c/s320/DSCI0348.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521257349224513202" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj__fAEZCh86cO_EifN2Irq9Fy8QkX8tj-vr6SNAt7Qfl4AdjAXe1kwUAxJh4BTKK4wVOMVngIjpDbabU0YTEXEQjVMRo2DJmrNZ0j3AiHuW7JTiY4Hw_zmFIk40VNnpBgikS7L/s1600/DSCI0367.JPG"></a><div><div style="text-align: center; "> For your compelling philosophy of thoughtful and environmentally-sensitive creativity and for your willingness to share locally!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Yesterday Betz White shared with a small group of metro DC ASG sewists her approach to sewing, her concern for, and interest in, the green sewing/crafting movement, gave us a look at her fabulous line of felted and green clothing and crafts, and provided us a glimpse onto the set of the <a href="http://www.marthastewart.com/portal/site/mslo/menuitem.3a0656639de62ad593598e10d373a0a0/?vgnextoid=4d4fed7957d42110VgnVCM1000003d370a0aRCRD">Martha Stewart Living Show! <br /></div><div>I need new DRESSES for work! I'm tired of getting up at "o'dark:30" and trying to find, iron and don multiple garments in an effort to look presentable (if not fab!). So dresses are my new best friend.</div><div>
<br /></div><div>Now I do love a good DVF-inspired wrap dress - so I reached into my stash and pulled out a piece of Mood-divinely-soft-geometric-cotton-knit and Butterick 4976....</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLgkmIwTh1Qq41-Fcc9gNZPGF7vb4bRNgNdJdZ7FX4AqxIOS8ZI6wh9I5WljyH7wuf1-nOojTXmjqJNKrsKxY1AdzGOykQf8VAFhukHCMmjDHip8CjBAHJRp717DuUnMXZUAjY/s320/Butterick+4976.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5516039372619362162" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 281px; height: 299px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; ">
<br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; ">and here's the finished garment. </span>The only change I made to the pattern was to NOT attach the self-belt so I would have more belting options.</div><meta charset="utf-8"><meta charset="utf-8"><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; ">

Kristen, my good friend and drumming mentor, and Kweku, her love and soulmate, got married on Saturday after a whirlwind courtship! Kristen asked me to help make her wedding dress about 2 weeks ago - and, oh yea, she said: "Do you think you could also make something for my mom and dad to wear to the ceremony? That won't take too long, will it?" Oh........well...........!</div><div><br /></div><div>So somehow between a my "real job", a trip to Eagles Mere for a family reunion, and myriad other of life's obligations (in those 2 weeks) - I finished the top to her wedding garment, a tunic for her dad and a dress for her mom.</div><div><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal; "><br /></span></b></div><div>Kweku's sister gave to Kristen a wedding skirt and top made from exquisite Ghanian fabric. The skirt fit her like a kid glove. But the top of the garment, shall we say, did not! I so wish we had taken a photo of the original top as it was quite remarkable in its design and construction. So I draped a new top for her (thanks to Susan Khalje's course) and after three fittings in so many days - here is the finished product! The fabric is a fine cotton batik with gold wax imprint...it is just amazingly beautiful.</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS7f2q6ZN_k1OYfzhszdldeBVe1wjnJDPK9BmU5x4j47KUFYTzoc5GS2rm5NfToCB7tJOxX8-An9mK5ca4jI2wKwet513O3r1369DjBkWqzxltZ8BadYmVTszFYggXi0PqetJg/s320/CIMG1277.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479835119425926802" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicvehOEvu7SIl9dMyqSbpUtVLq0JdliVM9Ga9VNtQT7-nUOUbNiof3H3qJKvcZFZmrWUWvpaQTIx6CXMU3y40aBXI-UQG-3tHCHWQo8B-8yCNdtqR4SOKC7yEzAMlhk3qgHnDH/s320/CIMG1179_2.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479832063900645026" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 162px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyqXMXB8f1r2J_-eDgmLUN0DsxCKLPTe_USQUJxrZaRM4flfWv2fx2m2canRkX6GQnSLQo3plbFXaHaUEk11N-y21ShS4tyakQFTrp73JDPxVhSimrsJEaEHLbxU5RP1cmt1g-/s320/CIMG1181.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479832073673811634" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><br /></span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); -webkit-text-decorations-in-effect: underline; "><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNf6QwCZkH81jfAzC7iDqSfcx2MBoDq4yKFz8DK4CJlzNK16-yUPmkugzbqydcoS6LqHQfFyj982EEqXesJR5xcm6dutJJchDeTRu4LtvqKU5o55b67Q-13RSw9SgnPcWPu3Jn/s320/CIMG1182.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479832082924592690" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 139px; height: 320px; " /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#0000EE;"><br /></span></div><div>And here is Kristen, her mom - Patrice, her dad - Dwight, and her sister - Erin.</div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style=""><div><span class=""><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinY8ULbFFSwgVoN5W8wz3MRJjwIZL2AczHOO_hIHdGUn9VrnLfoiP-vu1EwJIV2ejRjccvCwdNQKRv0mp2iXbECdl_YAjNOgh6a3LP_yhGWpKAeM4da2bzGgHHE7AxR_iurf3S/s320/CIMG1220.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5479832095822614338" style="display: block; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px; " /></span></div><div>Her dad's tunic is made from Ghanian fabric that Kweku and Kristen brought to me from Ghana.
